Trip to the islands of La Maddalena by dinghy - What to know before leaving
The La Maddalena Archipelago is not made up of a single island but rather a group of smaller islands located off the north coast of Sardinia. It is a unique place, with crystalline waters, white beaches and rich vegetation.
As you can see from the map, the Cala Francese Residence is located on the south-west side of the mother island, La Maddalena, and it is thanks to this position that it enjoys a splendid view that extends north towards the island of Scatter as far as the distant coasts of Corsica.
In this article we will explain everything you need to know before embarking on an adventurous tour on a dinghy, and in particular:
The best way to explore the Archipelago is certainly by sea by renting a practical dinghy, with or without a boat licence. This allows you to go around in total freedom and to independently reach the most unexplored and exclusive beaches and places of the archipelago. You can immerse yourself in the crystal clear waters to discover the wonders of the seabed or relax while admiring the beauty that the Archipelago offers.
If you are looking for a way to explore the archipelago of La Maddalena in freedom and autonomy, renting a dinghy is the perfect solution for you.
Advantages of a trip with a rented dinghy:
The freedom to go where you want, when you want and above all with whoever you want.
The possibility of exploring the most remote bays and beaches of the archipelago that otherwise would not be accessible on foot or by car.
Go to more exclusive, less known and therefore less crowded places.
The possibility of snorkelling or diving in the crystalline waters.
The chance to admire the beauty of the archipelago from the sea.
Things to see on your dinghy trip
The island of Spargi, the island with the most beautiful beaches in the whole archipelago, including the famous Cala Corsara, Cala Soraya, Cala Granara and Cala dell'Amore
The island of Caprera, where Giuseppe Garibaldi lived and where you can find the iconic Cala Coticcio.
The natural pools of Budelli, the island where the famous Pink Beach is located.
The Port of the Madonna, or the space between the island of Budelli, the Island of Razzoli and the Island of Santa Maria.
Santa Maria Island, the island with rocks strangest of the Archipelago.
We advise against visiting the island of La Maddalena with a dinghy since it is possible to do it with your own car or motorbike, it is better to focus on the other islands that can only be reached by boat or the more remote beaches of Caprera.
To discover the most beautiful beaches of the archipelago you can also read these two articles from our blog on the most beautiful bays of the island of Caprera< u> or the most beautiful beaches on the island of La Magdalene.
Tips for safe travel at sea
Confront the renter about the weather conditions before leaving, have them explain what all the rules are inside the Archipelago and all the characteristics of the dinghy you want to rent.
Wear a life jacket if you are a beginner and if there are people with you who cannot swim, have them wear it too.
Do not exceed the maximum speed allowed, enjoy the day in complete relaxation, there is no hurry!
Be careful of other boats and ships, even at sea there is traffic.
Before turning off the engine, relaxing and sunbathing, make sure you are well anchored. Take a fixed point as a reference to understand if you are still moving or not. - you can also watch this short video to better understand how to perform the maneuver, Normally it is good to sink the line or chain for a measure at least 3 times the depth of the seabed.
Remember that in case of difficulty or emergency situations you can always contact the coastguard by calling 1530 from your mobile phone
Types of dinghies that can be rented
Ribs of about 6 meters with outboard motor up to 40 horsepower, which can be driven WITHOUT a boat license, with a capacity of up to 6 people.
Ribs from 7 meters upwards with outboard engine over 40 horsepower, for those with a driving licence, with a maximum capacity usually between 8 and 10 people.
Rental with driver for complete relaxation
If you don't have a boat license or you don't feel confident driving a dinghy, even for 40 horsepower, charterers usually also offer the option of renting a dinghy with a skipper. The skipper is an expert driver, who knows the Archipelago inside out. This will allow you to relax and enjoy the trip without worrying about anything.
Rules when renting a dinghy
As with cars and scooters, a rental contract between you and the renter is also required for dinghies, fill it out and read it carefully in detail.
Fuel is always excluded, the dinghy can be rented with a full tank and must be returned with a full tank.
Rentals are normally open from 9.00, the maximum return time for rented dinghies is always at 18.00.
Prices for renting a dinghy
Rental prices vary based on several factors, such as:
the season (lowest prices from May to June, highest in July and August and lower again in September and October)
the engine capacity
the size of the dinghy
state of wear of the dinghy and equipment: newer boats may cost more but can guarantee greater comfort - for example, we recommend requesting, if available, the model with awning to shelter from the sun during the hottest hours (and please remember to close it before restarting the boat thus avoiding the sail effect)
presence or absence of a driver
If you are looking for a way to explore the La Maddalena Archipelago in freedom and autonomy, renting a dinghy is the perfect solution for you. Renting a dinghy gives you the possibility to go where you want, when you want, and to explore the most remote bays and beaches of the archipelago.
